Christmas Markets in Hamburg – Something for all tastes and desires from mid-November until Christmas Day
Christmas in Hamburg, like in most cities in Germany, is a year-long awaited season. The lights and decorations are carefully hung by mid November, expectant for the opening night of the many Christmas markets around the Elbemetropole. Even though the snowy winter wonderland scene has avoided the city the past few years, the chatter of people enjoying a warm glass of Glühwein, a Bratwurst or a bag roasted almonds has not decreased. Among the many Christmas markets available in Hamburg, the following five are specially noteworthy. Be it its historic nature or niche thematic, these „Weihnachtsmärkte“ are worth a visit.
The Hamburg Historic Town Hall Christmas Market breathes pure Christmas spirit and is a popular destination among locals and tourists alike. With the imposing Hamburg Town Hall as backgdrop, its flying Santa coming out three times per day (16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, weather allowing) to delight visitors with his charm, and the memorable giant Chrismast tree, this market is a must-stop on any winter visit to the second biggest city in Germany.
On the other side of the spectrum, if you prefer something slightly less conventional, the erotic Christmas market in St. Pauli’s Reeperbahn area, Santa Pauli, is the place to be. Promoting themselves as the “horniest Christmas market” in the city, you can expect to find live music and “frivolous” enjoyment galore from mid November to mid December.

For a more romantic atmosphere, the Weisser Zauber Christmas Market, on the shores of the Inner Alster (Binnenalster – artificial lake in the center of the city) artisans and food stalls come together with a feel of magic in the air. The aroma of sauteed mushrooms, Christmas sweets and mülled wine will involve your senses, while you stroll around admiring the intricate delicacy of the hand-crafted products.
A more literary experience is brough to the visitor at the Gänsemarkt Christmas Market. Recently renovated, this market does not only offer food and artesan products, but also a series of lectures, readings, music and plays, all relating to poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, whose memorial is located in this location.
And last but not least, it would not be Hamburg without a maritime inspired Christmas market. The Fleetinsel Christmas Market between the Alster and the Harbour offers a perfect mix between the traditions of the north German city and a modern attitude. Noticeably quieter than its city center counterparts, this market is perfect for a family day out, with plenty of entertainment for everyone. Make sure to catch a glimpse at the old sailing ships decorated for the occasion!
Whether you want to enjoy some food and mulled wine with friends or enjoy a nice Christmas day with your family, Hamburg has plenty to offer during the pre-Christmas season.
