Hamburg’s annual MS DOCKVILLE Festival for Music and Art is celebrating it’s tenth anniversary from 19-21 August 2016.
Located directly in front of the river Elbe in Wilhelmsburg, the three day festival hosts an international line-up with 23 bands from the USA, Austrailia, Israel, and Europe. This year’s program covers a large gamut popular styles of modern music. The American quintet THE NEIGHBOURHOOD will headline the festival with their performance on Friday August 19th. For those not familiar with the young Californian band, they are known for their unique mix of alternative rock, hip hop, and R&B.
Among the several bands from the UK performing Dockville this year is the electro pop group BASTILLE , who have taken England by storm winning the British Breakthough Act award and selling millions of albums. The math rock band THE FOULS are returning to Dockville after a much praised concert in 2013. Many say they have matured to perfection in recent years as well as becoming more mainstream. London’s CRYSTAL FIGHTERS have been known to bring the audience to a frenzy with their blend of alternative synthpop and folktronica.
The German reggae-folk duo Milky Chance are also returning to the Dockville stage on Sunday August 21 after having recently toured extensively in the US, including a slot on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Another German act worth checking out on Sunday are the electropunk rockers FRITTENBUDE. Representing Hamburg’s eclectic music scene will be DAVID AUGUST with his melodic and emotional eletronic pop and the local cult band DIE GOLDENEN ZITRONEN whose music crosses genres as diverse as new wave, free jazz, krautrock and pop.
The large variety of great music presented at Dockville is matched by the range of visual arts, with exhibitions of artists from Syria, Iran, and Europe. The featured artist this year is Hamburg’s TinTin Patrone who is known for her group Krachkistenorchester (translating roughly to „noise box orchester“) who improvise on her homemade instruments, see translation, as well as the INTERNATIONAL MUSICMOTORCYCLECLUB. TinTin is this year’s artist-in-residence at the Werkhaus Munzviertel which you can read more about at www.muenzviertel.de
For those who are willing to take the risk with Hamburg’s unpredictable weather, possible rain, there is camping at Dockville, as well as showers and plenty of food and drink. A word to the wise: prepare for rain or shine and have a great time!
