Liberty is a summer exclusive in Hamburg- don’t miss it! There are two locations: one is right next to the Satoriusstraße bus stop in Eimsbüttel. The other store is conveniently located by the Altonaer Fischmarkt. The Fischmarkt location can be reached by ferry (Landungsbrücken) or the Fischauktionshalle bus stop, and today I’ll be writing about this shop.
The business was started in 2013 by ethical vegans who jumped at the chance to create Germany’s first vegan ice cream cafe and ever since then they’ve been dishing out delicious vegan delectables! The Fischmarkt cafe is adorably decorated, featuring a vintage couch I have yet to sit on (it’s always occupied), multiple tables, and an overall pink aesthetic- but that’s just icing on the literal cake. The menu features all sorts of vegan delights from any style of ice-cream from a scoop to a milkshake, to cake, to hot dogs and sandwiches. You can sit inside and read a book while sipping on coffee or take an ice cream cone with you for a nice walk along the Hamburg Hafen (harbor).
All of the coffees are made with oat milk, which is a refreshing alternative compared to soy milk (the most popular dairy-free alternative in Hamburg cafes). Since Liberty has warm and cold offerings it’s perfect for every weather. It’s a great place for a snack or even lunch, and the customer base has a large demographic- everyone from families, to friends, to couples stop by. It’s a cute spot to chat with friends and enjoy delicious vegan food. They are open from 12-7pm from late spring until early fall, making it a special summer experience to savor! I definitely missed it during the winter, but it’s well worth the wait.
